Mock interview with AI: how to practise with ChatGPT
An AI chat can be an interviewer who asks about your stack and honestly reviews your answers. The key is giving it the right role. Here is how.
Why practise with AI
Reading questions and answering them in an interview are different skills. Out loud you notice where you get confused, where an answer drags on and where you do not know the topic. AI is there any time, never gets tired and adapts to a specific job.
What the prompt needs
- A role: "you are an experienced engineer hiring for this position".
- Rules: one question at a time, wait for the answer, no hints until the end.
- About you: stack, level, a short summary of your experience or your whole CV.
- The job: its text, so the questions are about this stack and these duties.
- The ending: after 10 questions, a review: strengths, what to improve, examples of better answers, scores from 1 to 10.
Without rules the AI dumps 20 questions with answers at once, and that is not an interview.
A short prompt to start with
- "Run a mock interview with me. You are an experienced engineer hiring a Middle Python Developer."
- "Ask one question at a time and wait for my answer. If my answer is vague, ask a follow-up. Do not give the correct answers until the end."
- "My stack: Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Docker. Experience: 3 years."
- "After 10 questions, give me a review and hard and soft skills scores from 1 to 10. Start with a greeting and the first question."
That is enough for a first try. But typing your stack, CV and the job in by hand every time takes a while, so we did it for you.
How to practise better
- Answer by voice. ChatGPT and Gemini have a voice mode, the closest thing to a real conversation.
- Do not google while answering. The point is to see what you know right now.
- Ask it to dig deeper: "ask two follow-up questions about my answer".
- Keep the review and repeat the interview on your weak topics a week later.
Where AI gets it wrong
AI can be too polite and praise weak answers. Ask it to be a strict interviewer. Check technical facts in the documentation: AI is sometimes confidently wrong. And do not learn answers by heart: in an interview, reasoning matters.

And that is just one part. AutoApply also applies on Djinni and DOU for you with a cover letter for every job, and has a CV builder, a reply funnel and AI tips for each job. All of it is free: see what AutoApply does and create an account in a minute.
FAQ
Which AI is best for practice?
Any modern one will do: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. The prompt matters more: with a role, rules and your job.
Can I practise in English?
Yes. Answer in English and the AI will switch to it. It is good preparation for a screening in English.
How much does the AutoApply tool cost?
Nothing. The interview prompt, like the rest of AutoApply, is free.
